Buenos Aires 1910: Memories of the World to Come

Between 1997 and 1999, Margarita Gutman directed the curatorial works and production of the exhibit “Buenos Aires 1910: Memories of the World to Come” presented in Buenos Aires, Washington, and New York.

This exhibit had the support of the Getty Research Institute and later, that of the Foundation of the Arts of the Government of Argentina, of the World Bank, of IIED-Latin America, and of the School of Architecture and Urban Studies of Buenos Aires.

Recognized for its excellent curation, its design, and aesthetic production, it was presented in Buenos Aires between the months of May and July of 1999. There, 800 images and objects belonging to 40 museums and different archives were exhibited. Visited by more than 100,000 people in the Abasto of Buenos Aires, it received extensive media coverage.

Later relocated to the World Bank in the U.S. State Department in Washington and to the World Financial Center in New York, the exhibit was also the central piece in a two-month festival, “Celebrate Buenos Aires!” which included 30 events over the span of 60 days in New York City.

The book catalog of the exhibition was published in 1999 and it is currently out of print. You may see the digital version of the book in the website of the Observatory on Latin America.
